About Us

Big Bear Ranch Rescue was founded by three women who came to animal welfare from different paths, but who shared the same belief: the best way to help animals is to support the communities they are in and the people who love them.

Dr. Kayla Lawlor, a veterinarian serving Clay County, has seen firsthand the medical needs of animals and the challenges families face when trying to access the care their pets need. Kaitlin Mashburn was born and raised in Murphy, North Carolina and has spent her entire life working in animal welfare, building strong relationships and serving the community she calls home. Marnie Fitzgerald brings experience as a former animal control officer and Certified Professional Dog Trainer, where she saw firsthand how early intervention, education, and support can prevent small problems from becoming tragic emergencies.

Together, their experiences shaped the foundation of Big Bear Ranch Rescue. We believe rescue should not begin when an animal is already in crisis. It should begin much earlier - with accessible resources, education, veterinary support, responsible pet ownership, and a community willing to help families before they reach a breaking point. When intervention is needed, we are here to help animals find safety and a second chance. But our ultimate goal is to build a community where fewer animals ever need rescuing in the first place.
